Real people designing spaces that'll outlast us all
Look, we started this studio back in 2012 because honestly, we were tired of seeing heritage buildings getting demolished or "modernized" into oblivion. There's something about Vancouver's architectural DNA that deserves better than cookie-cutter glass boxes, y'know?
We're that weird hybrid team that actually gets excited about both hundred-year-old brick detailing AND sustainable tech solutions. Our approach isn't rocket science - we just believe new buildings should respect where they're standing, and old ones deserve another century of life with some thoughtful updates.
These days we've got a crew of twelve folks who genuinely love what they do. Some mornings you'll find us sketching heritage restoration details, afternoons we're deep in BIM models for a commercial project. It's chaotic sometimes but that's kinda the point.
Been at this for 18 years now, mostly because I can't shake the feeling that every building tells a story worth preserving. Started my career restoring Edwardian homes in Victoria before moving to commercial work.
Notable Work: Gastown Heritage Block Restoration, Marine Building Interior Modernization
Random Fact: Collects vintage architectural hardware - yeah, I'm that person
The guy who'll spend three hours arguing about window proportions (in a good way). Trained in London, worked in Toronto, settled here because nowhere else combines heritage and nature quite like Vancouver does.
Notable Work: Kitsilano Mixed-Use Development, Heritage House Passive Retrofit Series
Random Fact: Built a tiny house in Squamish just to test sustainable systems
Came to us from a big corporate firm where "sustainable" meant slapping some solar panels on anything. Here, we actually do the math. LEED AP certified but honestly more interested in real-world performance than certifications.
Notable Work: Net-Zero Heritage Conversion, UBC Campus Sustainability Initiative
Random Fact: Grows vegetables on her balcony using greywater systems she designed
Our detail guy - the one who notices when millwork is off by 3mm. Graduated from UBC five years back and hasn't stopped learning since. Gets genuinely excited about construction documents, which is either inspiring or concerning.
Notable Work: Commercial Street Retail Restoration, False Creek Residential Tower
Random Fact: Takes film photos of buildings nobody else notices
Joined us after spending way too long doing high-end residential interiors that all looked the same. Here, she gets to work with actual character - exposed brick, original beams, weird spatial quirks that make buildings interesting.
Notable Work: Yaletown Loft Conversions, Historic Theatre Interior Preservation
Random Fact: Refuses to specify anything she wouldn't use in her own home
The walking encyclopedia we call when we're stuck. Been documenting BC's architectural history for 30+ years. If a building's got a story, James knows it - and probably has photos from before your parents were born.
Notable Work: Provincial Heritage Registry Contributions, CPR Station Restorations
Random Fact: Has original blueprints from 1890s buildings just... at home
We don't just Google a building's history. Site visits, archival digs, talking to old-timers who remember when that warehouse was actually a warehouse - it all feeds into better design decisions.
You're involved from day one. No disappearing for months then revealing some "genius" concept you'll hate. Weekly check-ins, transparent budgeting, honest conversations about what'll work and what won't.
We model everything in Revit but also build physical study models. 3D printing heritage details to test against originals. Thermal imaging old walls before we touch them. Modern tools serving timeless goals.
We design for the next hundred years, not the next trend cycle. Materials that'll age well, systems you can actually maintain, spaces flexible enough for whatever comes next. Your grandkids should still love this building.
Whether you've got a heritage building that needs saving or a new project that should respect its context, let's talk. Coffee's on us.
